The Famous "Invisible Gorilla" Experiment (1999)

In 1999, psychologists Christopher Simons and Daniel Chabris at Harvard University created what is now the most famous psychology video in history. Participants watched a short video clip of two teams (one wearing white shirts, one wearing black shirts) passing basketballs and were asked to count the exact number of passes made by the white team.

Halfway through the 30-second clip, a person in a full black gorilla suit walked into the middle of the court, stopped, faced the camera, thumped their chest for 9 seconds, and walked off screen. Over 50% of viewers who completed the counting task had zero awareness that a gorilla had appeared!

Looking vs. Seeing: Eye Tracking Evidence

A natural assumption is that participants missed the gorilla because they were looking at the basketball. Eye-tracking technology proved this assumption wrong.

Studies tracking gaze fixations revealed that participants who missed the gorilla looked directly at it for an average of 1.0 to 2.5 seconds! Photons from the gorilla struck their fovea, photoreceptors fired, and the signal reached Area V1. However, because their frontoparietal attention network was filtering for white objects, the black gorilla was actively filtered out before reaching conscious working memory.

Nilli Lavie’s Perceptual Load Theory

Why does inattentional blindness occur? Professor Nilli Lavie developed Perceptual Load Theory, solving the classic Early Selection vs. Late Selection debate in cognitive psychology:

• Low Perceptual Load: When a task is easy, spare attentional capacity automatically "spills over" to process peripheral distractors.

• High Perceptual Load: When a task demands 100% of your visual working memory capacity, the brain engages Early Selection Filters in the thalamic reticular nucleus, completely blocking unexpected stimuli from entering the conscious cortex.

The Harvard Radiologist Gorilla Study (2013)

In 2013, Trafton Drew and Jeremy Wolfe tested 24 expert board-certified radiologists. The doctors examined lung CT scans for cancerous nodules—a task they perform daily with supreme precision.

On the final scan, the researchers inserted a small image of a gorilla—48 times larger than the average lung nodule—into the lung tissue. 83% of the expert radiologists looked straight at the gorilla without seeing it! Expert schema-driven attention narrows visual search so intensely to task-relevant features (nodules) that glaring anomalies are completely invisible.
